The incident in south Texas comes amid ramped-up deportations<\/strong><\/p>\n US Border Patrol agents have reportedly come under fire from suspected Mexican cartel members in southern Texas during an attempted illegal border crossing.<\/p>\n US President Donald Trump declared a national emergency at the border with Mexico last week and deployed the military to several crossings, while seeking to deport potentially millions of people inside the country illegally.<\/p>\n \u201cBorder Patrol agents near Fronton, [Texas] were fired upon from [Mexico] by suspected cartel gunmen as a group of illegal aliens were being brought across the river,\u201d<\/em> Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin reported<\/a> on Monday afternoon, citing multiple law enforcement sources.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m told [Border Patrol] returned fire, nobody hit on either side, and that the illegal aliens did not make it across,\u201d<\/em> Melugin added.<\/p>\n Texas DPS @LtChrisOlivarez<\/a> tells me DPS is now patrolling the area and has a drone in the air and can see Mexican military assets now staging on the other side of the river. pic.twitter.com\/z61RkrVvEq<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 Bill Melugin (@BillMelugin_) January 27, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n According to Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) spokesman Lieutenant Chris Olivarez, the Mexican military has deployed armored vehicles on the other side of the Rio Grande, providing surveillance drone photos.<\/p>\n\n
