Senator Mark Warner says President Donald Trump is ignoring spy agencies\u2019 data on Iran, which still shows no move toward nuclear weapons<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

US intelligence still assesses that Iran, despite stockpiling enriched uranium, has not taken steps to develop nuclear weapons \u2013 a view which has remained unchanged since March, according to the Senate Intelligence Committee\u2019s top Democrat.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump claimed on Tuesday, however, that he believes Tehran was \u201cvery close\u201d<\/em> to obtaining nuclear weapons at the time of Israel\u2019s recent military strikes. His statement contradicts earlier remarks by his own director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, who told lawmakers that Iran \u201cis not building\u201d<\/em> one. The Iranian authorities insist that their nuclear program is purely peaceful and that they have every right to pursue it.<\/p>\n

In an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday, the vice chairman of the Intelligence Committee, Democratic Senator Mark Warner, said senators were briefed this week \u2013 following the Israeli strikes \u2013 that US spy agencies still find no evidence that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

He criticized Trump\u2019s remarks as \u201cforeign policy by tweet,\u201d<\/em> calling them irresponsible and perplexing, given that they contradict the intelligence briefings lawmakers have received.<\/p>\n

Warner noted that in March, Gabbard stated that Iran had \u201ctaken no steps toward building a bomb.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we got reconfirmed\u2026 Monday of this week, that the intelligence hasn\u2019t changed,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n

At the time, she said the US intelligence community \u201ccontinues to assess that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has not authorized the nuclear weapons program he suspended in 2003.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

When Trump was reminded of this by journalists on Tuesday, he replied: \u201cI do not care what she said.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Responding to Trump\u2019s remark, Warner said, \u201cyou\u2019ve got the president basically dismissing all of the intelligence.\u201d<\/em> He added that even as vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, he is unclear on the current US strategy, asking: \u201cIf I don\u2019t have the foggiest idea, what do the American people know?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Trump said he has not yet decided whether to support Israel\u2019s military action against Iran, but echoed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s claim that Iran was \u201cweeks away\u201d<\/em> from developing a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n

Since launching its campaign against Iran last week, Israel has targeted uranium enrichment infrastructure, bombing centrifuge facilities \u2013 including a site at Natanz, south of Tehran \u2013 and laboratories used to convert uranium gas into metal, according to Israeli officials and the IAEA.<\/p>\n

Trump has called for Iran\u2019s \u201cunconditional surrender,\u201d<\/em> claiming that the US now controls its airspace. He also said killing Khamenei would be \u201ceasy.\u201d<\/em> Media reports suggest he may soon join Israel\u2019s military campaign.
