The European Commission president has been under scrutiny over a multi-billion-dollar Covid-19 vaccine deal<\/strong><\/p>\n A group of lawmakers in the European Parliament (MEPs) claim they have secured enough support to initiate a no-confidence vote against European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen over her failure to cooperate with a probe into a multi-billion dollar deal she struck with pharma giant Pfizer for COVID vaccines, the Financial Times has reported.<\/p>\n In May, the EU\u2019s Court of Justice ruled that the European Commission wrongly denied the New York Times access to text messages von der Leyen exchanged with Pfizer CEO, Albert Bourla.<\/p>\n The court rejected the commission\u2019s\u00a0claim that it did not have the messages in its possession,\u00a0instructing it to provide \u201ccredible explanations\u201d<\/em> why the texts, which von der Leyen herself boasted of in public,\u00a0 were not retained by officials.<\/p>\n The EC\u00a0promised\u00a0to come up with more detailed reasoning for its\u00a0denial, but has not committed to releasing the texts.<\/p>\n Romanian MEP Gheorghe Piperea told the FT that he will file a motion to stage a no confidence vote on Thursday after his group secured the required 72 signatures.<\/p>\n
