Israel\u2019s claims that Iran has been secretly developing nuclear weapons are false, Esmail Baghaei has said<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>Iran has no plans to obtain nuclear weapons but reserves the right to enrich uranium for civilian use, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei told RT on Saturday. He condemned recent Israeli and US strikes on Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities as dangerous and unprovoked.<\/p>\n

Baghaei dismissed Israeli claims that Tehran had been secretly developing nuclear weapons, which were cited as justification for the attacks. Reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) support Iran\u2019s position, he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Iran has made it clear for the past two or three decades that it is not seeking nuclear weapons,\u201d<\/em> Baghaei said. \u201cThere has never been weapons-grade enrichment in Iran. Please, you can go through the reports by the IAEA and show me one single clue or evidence of Iran\u2019s nuclear program deviating from peaceful purposes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a matter of fact that Iran\u2019s nuclear program remains totally peaceful,\u201d<\/em> he stressed.<\/p>\n

The spokesman referred to remarks by the global watchdog\u2019s chief, Rafael Grossi, who stated earlier this month that the agency has found no evidence of \u201ca systematic effort\u201d<\/em> by Iran to develop nuclear arms.<\/p>\n

Baghaei also voiced frustration with the IAEA for not strongly condemning the strikes. \u201cWhat is expected from the IAEA and its Board of Governors is to remain loyal to their responsibilities and mandates by condemning, unambiguously, the US and Israeli regime\u2019s attacks on our nuclear facilities,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n

He further defended Iran\u2019s right to enrich uranium under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe US is offering a very dangerous interpretation of the NPT\u00a0\u2013 that developing states have no right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. It is not acceptable for any responsible, decent member of the NPT,\u201d<\/em> Baghaei said.<\/p>\n
