Police are searching for a gunman who targeted first responders during a blaze in Idaho<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two firefighters were shot and killed in an apparent ambush while responding to a wildfire in Coeur d\u2019Alene, Idaho, on Sunday. Authorities said the gunman remains at large, and investigators are probing whether the fire was deliberately set to lure first responders.<\/p>\n

Emergency crews were dispatched to Canfield Mountain, a popular hiking and biking destination, around 1:30pm local time. Roughly 30 minutes later, reports of gunfire began coming in, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t know how many suspects are up there, and we don\u2019t know how many casualties there are,\u201d<\/em> Sheriff Robert Norris told reporters. \u201cWe are actively taking sniper fire as we speak.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Norris said the shooter appeared to be using a high-powered rifle and taking cover in rugged terrain. \u201cI\u2019m hoping that somebody has a clear shot and is able to neutralize [the suspect], because they\u2019re not showing any evidence of wanting to surrender,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n

Lieutenant Jeff Howard told ABC News that authorities are investigating whether the blaze was intentionally ignited to draw firefighters into a trap.<\/p>\n

Civilians, including hikers, were seen fleeing the area. Norris warned that some people may be trapped between the fire and the sniper.<\/p>\n

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed that federal agents were deployed to provide \u201ctactical and operational support.\u201d<\/em> A police helicopter was dispatched to assist but was unable to land due to continued gunfire.<\/p>\n
