The country is \u201ctotally reliant\u201d on the US, and would be better off as the 51st state, the US president has argued<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump has vowed to no longer let Canada \u201ctake advantage\u201d<\/em> of the US, once again stating that he wants to make the neighboring country America\u2019s 51st state. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Saturday, Trump said Canada would not even exist without US subsidies and business cooperation.<\/p>\n

Trump made similar remarks in the run-up to his inauguration earlier this month, suggesting that his administration could make Canada part of the US. Ottawa has dismissed these suggestions.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada\u2019s been taking advantage of the US for years. We\u2019re not going to let that happen,\u201d<\/em> Trump told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout our subsidy, Canada doesn\u2019t exist really. Canada is totally reliant on us, therefore they should be a state,\u201d<\/em> he said. Trump accused Canada of \u201ctreating us very unfairly on trade,\u201d<\/em> claiming that the US has been losing $250 billion a year to the neighboring state in trade deficits, while Canada does \u201calmost 90% of their business with the United States.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI could stop that in one day, and if I stopped that, Canada wouldn\u2019t exist as a country\u2026 I don\u2019t want to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on supporting a country unless that country is a state,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n

According to Trump, Canada would benefit from becoming part of the US.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it is a state, the people of Canada would pay a much lower tax. Their taxes would be cut in half\u2026 They\u2019ll get much better treatment, much better care,\u201d<\/em> he stated, adding that Canadians would also \u201chave no military problems\u201d<\/em> and \u201cwould be much more secure in every way.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s a great thing for Canada\u2026 I view it as, honestly, a country that should be a state,\u201d<\/em> Trump said.<\/p>\n

Trump earlier threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, saying the measure would strengthen the US economy. He reiterated the threat earlier this week, telling reporters that he plans to introduce the tariffs in February. Canada\u2019s outgoing prime minister, Justin Trudeau, responded, warning Trump that Canada will introduce retaliatory tariffs and \u201cprices for American consumers on just about everything will go up.\u201d<\/em> Earlier this month, Trudeau said there isn\u2019t \u201ca snowball\u2019s chance in hell\u201d<\/em> that Canada will become part of the US.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
